A great anime night needs four things: every streaming app on the big screen, light that doesn’t fight the picture, snacks you can eat without pausing, and a seat you’ll still be comfortable in twelve episodes later. Here’s the gear for each.
Patch note v3.1: told myself “one more episode” 11 times. Updated estimate to 12.
Get it on the big screen
Lag’s pick: Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Plus. Plugs into the TV’s HDMI port and runs the apps that matter, including Crunchyroll and Netflix. Watching on a laptop balanced on your knees is for emergencies only.
Light that helps the picture
A strip of light behind the TV softens the jump between a bright screen and a dark room, and it makes the whole wall glow in the show’s colors if you want it to.
Protocol’s pick: USB RGB LED Backlight Kit for 50–55″ TVs. Sized for a specific screen range, so it fits without guesswork, and it runs off the TV’s USB port. Tidy. Measured. Satisfactory, going on Exemplary.
Lag’s pick: KANTUTOE 16.4ft TV LED Lights. Fits 45–75 inch TVs and costs about a third as much. Stick it on, pick a color, done.
Snacks you don’t have to pause for
Lag’s pick: Pocky Variety Pack of 3. Thin, dipped, and designed to be eaten one-handed. The official snack of not looking away from the screen.
Protocol’s pick: Shirakiku Ramune Variety Pack, 6 bottles. The Japanese soda in the glass bottle sealed with a marble. Opening one properly takes a moment of focus, which makes it the perfect between-episodes ritual.
A seat for a whole season
Lag’s pick: Hobestluk Big Bean Bag Chair. Gaming chairs look cool. A big bean bag doesn’t care what you look like at episode twelve. Neither do I.
House Log
PROTOCOL: You said one episode.
LAG: I said one season.
PROTOCOL: You said one episode. I have the audio log.
LAG: Next episode starts in five seconds. Four. Three.
Be right there. Probably.
